Tattoo Studios Could See Spike In Clients As Workplaces Expand Acceptance Of Body Art

August 24, 2018

According to an August 2018 study of 2,000 people that was published in the journal Human Relations, having visible tattoos has no detrimental effect on finding employment in a typical workplace environment. As the Chicago Tribute points out in its assessment of the University of Miami Business School study, the employment rates were not affected by “the number, visibility or offensiveness of their tattoos.” This should come as great news to tattoo artists, as the increasing acceptance of this ancient art means more customers could be coming through the door for larger and more frequent work that also allows for artistic skills to be put on display.

According to the Tribune’s summary of the study, both “blue” and “white” collar workers in both management and non-management roles have overall reported “no adverse employment outcomes.” Believe it or not, “having one or more tattoos was associated with slightly higher employment and more hours worked,” according to the study.  The Daily Mail newspaper adds that 40 percent of today’s “young adults” have at least one tattoo. As a result, a hiring manager would find themselves at acompetitive disadvantage for the most qualified employees” if ink on the skin was viewed as a non-starter. Tattoo artists who’ve been around for a while have probably heard plenty of comments from clients who wanted something “small” or “conservative” that could be covered up by long sleeves in a pinch. These days may be dwindling, as more and more people are seeing tattoos as “expressions of creativity and commemorations of life events.”
